RED CABBAGE WATER/Sketch for a table setting
– a project by Mariane Lyngsø and Bente lilja Lyhne
in cooperation with chief Jakob Vinkler and process philosopher Johan Poulsen
How can we enter into a “natural” relationship with nature? Have we ever had one? In our search for understanding, we have explored the cultivated red cabbage through our own human preoccupations. We have dissected, preserved and documented its potential for metamorphosis. We have brought the motif of vanity into contemporary context by manipulating the cabbages swelling beauty, new shoots, and shifting colors, as well as the later emergence of mold and mites. The work is staged through chiaroscuro: we can only see what we illuminate, while part of our knowledge always remain in darkness.By allowing the cabbage space to unfold its full (almost) potential, we seek to approach it as an equal partner – while remaining aware that something will always remain hidden beyond the reach of the light. Trough the cabbage, we glimpse a natural cycle that point towards an ecocentric perspective, placing both our actions and our artistic practice in a new light.
